DESCRIPTION.
Wine is produced throughout Croatia. Naturally, climate strongly influences the type of wine produced in a given area. The variance in climate throughout the country has allowed for the emergence of wines characteristic to particular regions, thereby yielding a wide variety of flavors.
Some of the best-known wine-production areas are on the Dalmatian islands. Just as along the northern coast, Dalmatia and its surrounding islands enjoy a Mediterranean climate of warm, humid summers and brief, dry winters. What makes the wines of this region unique are the Dinaric Alps. This mountain range stretches along the southern coast and creates microclimates of cooler alpine nature at higher altitudes.
Dalmatian grapes are grown on steep hills with little rainfall; such harsh growing conditions give rise to highly individualized wines, most of which are Mediterranean-style reds. Plavac Mali is perhaps the most renowned of the Dalmatian indigenous grapes, and is a direct descendant of the original Zinfandel grape - Crljenak Kaštelanski - also originating from Dalmatia.
